By the way this split in the seam was 14 inches long!

Quickly does it!

I needed to cover a hole in a pair of waders  really quickly the other day . This is never easy, as you just need to get everything ready first, which takes time. However I was trying out a new product and thought that it would be worth a test to see if it would do the job. The new product has a completely different way of  curing. Instead of waiting for the solvent to evaporate, like in traditional glues and adhesives, this product cures when exposed to Ultra Violet Light (i.e. bright sunlight).

I have used it before on pin holes on waders and it works well. You simply put a drop of glue over the pin hole and shine a UV torch at it for a few seconds. How simple is that? Best of all is that it is flexible and transparent and forms a layer over the hole.

Pine nuts

Shelled pine nuts

I had an unpleasant experience the other day. I ate a mouth full of delicate “small” pine nuts which had been bought for a Saturday lunch-time salad. They tasted fine and I had no reason to think that they were anything else. However a day or two later I began to get a very unpleasant taste in my mouth. I thought it might have been caused by some insect repellant I had been spraying that morning, so thought no more about it. But every time I ate something that day and for the next four days, I had a really unpleasant bitter taste at the back of my mouth. The flavour of coffee became quite disgusting. Wine became undrinkable; most food tasted unpleasant at best and inedible at worst.  I became quite concerned and  discussed it with my wife, and she too said she had exactly the same symptoms. We both became quite worried and called our local doctor, thinking we had eaten something poisonous. The doctor said it was almost certainly an unidentified virus producing the symptoms.  My brother-in-law reported that he had also had a very bad reaction with very similar symptoms a month or two before, and had been quite ill. Following further investigation and a thorough internet search we found in amongst the blogs, much more circumstantial evidence pointing towards oxidised pine nuts causing the problem.

Anyway it is now being recognised more widely and colleagues have put up a note about it on Wikipedia.

Leaky Soft Top Roof?

Stormsure is great for fixing leaks in damaged soft top roof material. There is a short video which shows how a slash can be repaired so that it hardly shows from the outside at all. This video is now being viewed by about 1000 people per month and sales to these viewers has gone up significantly. Check it out on www.youtube.com/user/glueshop/

Whether it is worn fabric or the dreaded vandal who has slashed the roof, you can make a quick and good quality repair, which will not leak, with just a few minutes labour and a bit of care and attention. See the videos and learn why Stormsure is such a useful product.  You can even cover a hole without a patch!

New Products coming up for 2011

It is that time of year again when we add new products to our offering and chop out the products that do not sell so well (or we can no longer obtain).

We will shortly have some great instant patches. These can be used for quick repairs on tents, kites and bladders, waterproof clothing and inflatable items like pool toys etc. The patches are clear polyurethane film, which is incredibly strong and resilient. Much better than those PVC patches which never last very long. They are really simple to use. Just peel off the backing paper and press them firmly into place on a flat surface. They are not as strong as using layers of Stormsure adhesive, but much quicker. If you have them in your pocket you can fix a problem in just a few seconds. They will be available online in the first instance. Postage will be standard letter rate – so that will help to keep the cost down.

Leaky Water Pipe

My garden is as dry as a desert.

I have tried holding the hose pipe over the flower beds but it takes so long and much of the water runs off. Anyway, I knew that somewhere in the shed I had one of those “leaky pipes” where the water seeps out all along the length at a slow and gentle rate. This allows the soil to get damp and then absorb the water. Needless to say, when I tried it out there was a great spray of water gushing out of the side. On inspection, it looks like I drove over it with the lawn mower last year. There’s a nasty gash about two inches long in the middle.

No problem however once I had fixed it with Stormsure Flexible Repair Adhesive. It works a treat and my flowers will be blooming long before the next rainfall. Hopefully I shall be snoozing in the hammock and not holding the hose!

Self Inflating Mattresses with pin holes and rips

Now days many campers have self inflating mattresses.

These are thinner than the old inflatable Lilo, but contain expanding  foam rubber  inside them. To inflate them you just take the stopper out of the valve and the air rushes in as the foam expands. You can firm up the inflation by blowing if you want to, but usually it is not necessary. But if you have a pin hole it is not obvious until you have gone to lie down. Slowly the air seeps out until your hips meet the ground and you feel very uncomfortable. But as soon as you get off the mattress, it re-inflates!  Pins holes can be found by putting the mattress under water.  Apply the Stormsure Flexible Repair Adhesive once dry and allow to cure in the normal way.  Occasionally I have seen large rips in the mattress, where the foam has been exposed. This might seem to be a disaster. But Stormsure applied over the exposed foam will stop air leaking out through the open cell structure of the foam and keep it airtight. the mattress will have many more year life in it.

Of course Stormsure is also great for fixing the regular “inflate it yourself” air mattresses.

Inflatable Canoes with a leaking seam

The sun must be out, and so must the canoe people.  In the last week I have had calls from half a dozen people with inflatable canoes. They all have leaks in them and they need to know how to fix it.

Well… small pin hole leaks and cuts up to 1cm or so are the easiest to fix. It really is simple. Clean the damaged area first of all. Deflate the canoe and then put a small drop of Stormsure Flexible Repair adhesive onto the hole or pin prick. Let the glue level out into a thick film, and leave to cure overnight. You will need to leave it flat and level while it cures.

Some of you have sprung leaks along the welded seams of the inflated sections. If they are small leaks these can be fixed by painting Stormsure Adhesive along the seam with a brush. Don’t forget to deflate the canoe first! You can thin the glue with StormCure Accelerator. This makes it easier to paint on in a thin layer. It also cures much quicker.

If you have over inflated the section and it has burst you will need to spend a bit more time on the repair. You will need to hold the 2 sections together while the glue cures. This can be done by  putting some sticky tape behind the damaged edges and pressing the edges on to the tape. The idea is to get the tape to hold the edges in the correct position while the glue cures. Once is has cured you can strengthen the seam area by painting a thin layer of Stormsure along the damaged part. This will give the whole section more support and strength, and ensure it is airtight.
