How to Fix a Hole in Waders

Wader leaks are almost always invisible. Thorns, barbed wire fence crossings, and rough limestone riverbed punch pinholes in the fabric that admit a slow drip rather than a flood, which means you only notice the problem after your socks are wet and your foot has gone cold. Breathable waders are particularly prone to this because the outer face fabric is thin and can be pierced by thorns, barbed wire, or streambed debris.

The other common failure is seam tape delamination. Heat-sealed tape keeps the stitched seams on breathable waders waterproof, and once that tape lifts at an edge, water wicks along the exposed stitch holes. Even a small section of lifted tape can admit a surprising amount of water.

Neoprene waders fail differently: accidental contact with sharp objects (barbed wire, rocky streambeds, submerged branches) is the most common cause of tears, along with bonded seams that separate over time. Both modes of failure are straightforward to repair if caught early. A pinhole ignored over multiple trips becomes a larger tear that takes considerably more effort to seal permanently.

What You'll Need

  • Stormsure Flexible Repair Adhesive
  • Bucket or bathtub of water
  • Torch or bright LED light
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Masking tape

How To Do It

1. Find every leak before you start repairing

Turn the waders inside out and hold each panel against a bright light source in a darkened room. Pinholes in breathable fabric glow as bright pinpoints. For neoprene, inflate the wader leg by twisting the top closed and blowing air in, then submerge in a bathtub and watch for bubbles. Check the feet, behind the knees, the groin seam, and the upper thighs in that order, as these are the highest-wear zones. Mark every leak you find with a chalk dot on the inside before starting any repair.

2. Clean and dry the repair area

Wipe each marked repair site with isopropyl alcohol on a clean cloth and allow to dry for at least five minutes. On smooth neoprene, wipe the area around the hole thoroughly with IPA and allow to dry fully before applying adhesive. On breathable fabric laminate, clean only and do not sand: the laminate layers are thin and abrasion can damage the membrane.

Timing: 5 minutes drying after IPA clean

3. Apply Stormsure over the hole

Squeeze a small amount of Stormsure Flexible Repair Adhesive directly over the hole or lifted seam tape. For a single pinhole, a small drop spread generously over the puncture site is sufficient. Spread it flat over the hole using a gloved finger or matchstick, working from the centre outward. For a delaminated seam tape, lift the tape edge gently and work adhesive underneath it with a matchstick before pressing the tape back down. Apply a surface coat over the tape edge as well to prevent re-lifting.

4. Press flat and smooth the edges

Press the repair flat against a hard surface. For seam tape repairs, run a finger along the full repaired length with firm, even pressure. Remove any masking tape while the adhesive is still fresh, before it begins to cure. On breathable fabric, feather the edges of the Stormsure patch so there is no abrupt step that can catch on undergrowth and peel.

5. Cure flat for 24 hours

Lay the waders flat with each repair site facing upward and uncovered. Do not fold or compress the wader during cure as this can deform the adhesive before it has set. Stormsure cures in 24 hours at room temperature to a clear, flexible film. On breathable fabric the cured patch is transparent and barely visible. Do not rush this by applying heat; the cure develops best at ambient temperature.

Timing: 24 hours cure flat. Do not fold.

6. Retest every repair before use

After cure, retest using the same method you used to find the leaks. Hold the fabric up to the light and check each repair site: a successfully sealed pinhole will show no bright spot through the fabric. For neoprene, re-inflate and submerge. If any leak is still present, apply a second small drop of Stormsure and cure again. A second pass addresses any area where the first application was too thin.

Prevention Tip

Carry a small tube of Stormsure in your fishing bag and address pinholes the same evening you find them. A fresh puncture in breathable fabric is clean-edged and easy to seal with a single small application. A pinhole that has been wet and dried repeatedly has a frayed edge and contaminated laminate around it that makes a clean seal harder to achieve. The two minutes spent sealing a pinhole on the evening of the trip saves 20 minutes of more difficult work later and extends the life of a pair of waders by years.

Common Questions

Does Stormsure affect the breathability of breathable waders?

Stormsure covers the repair site only and cures to an impermeable film, which is exactly what a hole needs. The surrounding membrane is untouched and continues to breathe normally. The adhesive does not migrate through the fabric or affect membrane performance beyond the repaired area. For context, a pinhole seal with Stormsure covers less than a square centimetre of the total breathable surface area.

Can I repair stockingfoot waders the same way?

Yes. The repair process is identical. The toe seam on stockingfoot waders takes a lot of stress from boot lacing and is a common delamination point, so pay extra attention there when inspecting. The boot attachment area at the ankle is also worth checking after every season, as repeated wading boot buckle pressure can lift seam tape at that point.

My waders have multiple small pinholes across a wide area. Is repair still worthwhile?

Up to 10 or 12 isolated pinholes can be repaired individually in about 30 minutes, and the result is a fully watertight pair of waders that will last several more seasons. If the fabric is weeping moisture evenly across a large panel rather than leaking at specific points, this indicates membrane delamination rather than surface punctures, which is a different problem. Delaminated membranes cannot be repaired with surface adhesive and the waders will need replacing.

How long does a Stormsure wader repair last?

On correctly prepared surfaces, Stormsure forms a permanent flexible bond that moves with the fabric through bending and stretching. Pinhole repairs done on clean, dry, IPA-wiped fabric consistently outlast the surrounding laminate. Seam tape repairs on neoprene can last the life of the wader if the surface was properly cleaned before application.
